Female Rappers Flying Under The Radar
Female Rappers Flying Under The Radar

The matter of Yugen Blakrok that I slightly wrote about in my previous blog South African Acts Doing It Abroad got me thinking how many other artists are out there who are as good as her or maybe better so I thought let me share my favourite female rappers at the moment.

I don’t have that much of a list on this one but I have been listening to these two ladies for the last couple of months and I believe that they are some of the best rappers in the world at the moment and I suggest you listen to them.

Sampa The Great

Her real name is Sampa Tembo she was born in Ghana, grew up and Botswana, she studied in the USA and she is currently based in Australia.

This lady is a poet, rapper and singer I see her as a hip hop version of Asa, Ayo and Nneka all combined into one mega hip hop artist due to the way she is able to blend African sounds with her music. Just by listening to her music you get to hear sounds of artists that influenced her from Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, Asa, Nneka, Yasiin Bey and Thandiswa Mazwai yeah you read that right she says Thandiswa Mazwai is one of the artists that have influenced her.

I was able to gather that she has released three projects which are The Great Mixtape, HERoes Act 2 (With Estelle) and her debut album Birds and The BEE9 which I suggest that if you are a hip hop fan then it should be on your must-listen list as in yesterday.

Check out this YouTube video of her performing one of my favourite songs by her Rhymes of the East for the Colors show.

Little Simz

Her real name is Simbiatu, “Simbi” Abisola Abiola Ajikawo her parents are originally from Nigeria she was born in London and went to school at the same school that Leona Lewis schooled at St Mary’s Youth Club.

She is an actor, rapper and singer she has released a lot of mixtapes and if I’m not mistaken she has two albums of all of those projects I’ve listened to A Curious Tale of Trial + Person, Stillness in Wonderland, E.D.G.E and last Blank Canvas and for those Gorillaz fans if you don’t recognise the name then I suggest you go back and listen to Humanz (Super Deluxe) all over again because she is featured on Garage Palace.

One last thing that I think I should include here is that she is highly praised by Kendrick Lamar and if me suggesting this lady to you isn’t enough then that on its own should have a huge influence on you listening to her music.

Listen to the ladies and tell me on twitter what you think.
