Over the weekend Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the Groups plan of what a lot of people called the Netflix killer some are even going as far as saying things like it’s an Apple TV + killer but then I do not think we can go that far as yet because at moment Apple has not said much about their product besides that 45 minutes announcement they had the other day with them sharing their tv show producers and so forth without them talking about the products launch date and price.

So coming back to the matter at hand, on the 12th of November 2019 Disney will be launching Disney+ (Disney Plus) in the USA with plans of gradually going Global from going to Europe, Asia and then South America and so forth however when looking at the information that was provided to the public via their shareholder conference it did not seem like this service will be coming to South Africa or even Africa in the next 2-3 years unless they change their plans to accommodate us along the way.

The price, when compared to Netflix, is cheaper because the service is going at $6.99c which is roughly R97.44 per month or $69.99c which is roughly R961.84 annually (the rand to dollar conversion used is from the 15th of April 2019). Compare that with $9/$12/$16 (R99/R120/R165) plans that Netflix offers in the USA which is what I mentioned on the Netflix vs Showmax article.

This is what is going to drive droves of people over to this service. The content comes from the Disney subsidiaries which have been spending a lot of money in the last couple of years or so. You will be having stuff from Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Disney National Geographic (Yeah that’s correct they bought Fox which owns a large part of Nat Geo and that also means they have The Simpsons). Do not forget that when I say Disney, I am also talking about Disney Television Studios, Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Disney Channel.

The Mandalorian
The Mandalorian

Another thing that you should consider with the above-mentioned studios is that they bring forth old stuff like The Lion King, Aladdin, The Jungle Book just to name a few stuff that you might not have thought about. There is the fact that they are planning on bringing new seasons of Hannah Montana, High School Musical and a bunch of other shows. On the side, they are busy creating The Mandalorian and a Rogue One Spin-off which are both from the Star Wars side and then the is those Marvel shows which we have been hearing about for a while now which are Falcon and Winter Soldier, WandaVision and there is also something based on Loki and Hawkeye respectively. Uhhm there is also a show from Marvel called What If which looks at everything Marvel with the What if eye if I may call it that. They look at stuff like what if Peggy Carter was turned into the super soldier instead Steve Rogers becoming Captain America.

There is also that matter of every content rights that every other service (i.e. DStv, Showmax and Netflix) has at the moment is coming to an end in the next couple of years meaning that movies that are currently available on those services are going back to the owner who is going to licence them to Disney +.

Newer movies like Captain Marvel, the live action Aladdin, Toy Story 4 and Tim Button’s Dumbo will all be going straight there after their DVD release instead of going to rivals like Netflix and so forth. Which gives them an edge of some sort.

Remember the Marvel Netflix shows that got been cancelled in the last six months or so? Yeah, I am talking about The Punisher, The Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Guess what there is a possibility that they might be coming back on this service after two year or so as the contract that Marvel and Netflix had stipulated that the characters in those shows cannot be used on any other Marvel stuff for 2 years or so which means if Marvel wants to bring those shows back they can do that by maybe including them in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which starts just after Avengers Endgame and they are also saying that that phase will be closely connected to what happens in the TV Shows

Please also note that people who will sign up to this service will have access to 500 movies and 7000 episodes at launch which is a lot.

Their content will be viewable at a maximum of 4K and HRD at the moment unlike with Showmax.

I do not know yet if I agree with people when they say this is a Netflix killer as at the moment with my Netflix viewing, I do not have any Disney affiliated stuff there. The problem will only arise for me if only newer Marvel movies are done in a way that if you do not watch a certain series on Disney+ it means then missed part of the plot in the newer movie or something of that sort. If that doesn’t happen then I will not be affected as much because I will still go to the movies to check their blockbuster movies. On the other side, the drawback is that when I want to show my son their classic movies I will have to tap into their services as no one will have access to their content.
